I just wanted to let all of you out there know that I am sorry for
not having the time to update this FAQ and want to thank those who have
E-mailed me with many compliments and offer your skills to help me. For
those who have offered to help me, please E-mail me again as I have lost
your addresses in a hard drive crash. I have been busy this past few
months, switching jobs and school laying down harsh mid-terms as well as
finals. But I have gotten many things back in control and will dedicate
as much free time as I can to finishing up what I have started. Keep
those compliments and any other tidbits of information coming as I do
enjoy reading them. Another reminder is that my Japanese is very limited
so any information that I missed, contributions, comments or criticisms
(be gentle) can be sent to the E-mail address located at the bottom. Be

Introduction:

It has been a while since the last Dragon Quest has been released
in Japan. But, after a long silence, Enix has once again outdone
themselves in this old-school type RPG for the Nintendo Gameboy. It
incorporates the aspect of having monsters in your group and fighting
the battles as found in Dragon Quest 5. Many new elements are
implemented such as finding items as you wander the land, hunting for
monsters and building their levels so that you can compete with a friend
via the gameboy link-cable. I have not played far in the game but from
what I have seen, the game includes some monsters previously seen in the
Dragon Quest series such as the Golem that protects Cantlin (Dragon
Quest) and the tiger guarding Papa-san's sword (Dragon Quest 5). The
music in the game should also bring back memories of those 8-bit and 16-
bit days.

Fight - Use this to command your monsters in
attacking other monsters.

Item - Use this to use items in battle. Another
use for this is to increase the chances of getting
other monsters into your party ( See Basics of
Monster Caretaking ).

Tactics - Use this to change the battle tactics for
your monsters ( See Explanation of Status Screen
Commands for more information ).

Run - Used to Run away from battles.

Monster Stats:

Main Viewing Screen:

Strength - Determines attack damage. Increase in
strength results in larger damage.

Defense - Determines damage taken. Increase in
defense results in less damage taken.

Agility - Determines which monster will fight first.
Increase in agility results in fighting
earlier.

Intelligence - Determines your monster's
intelligence during battles. Increase in
intelligence results in your monster learning
skills faster as well as battle tactics.

Hunger - Determines your monster's hunger level.
Decrease in hunger results in your monster
obeying more of your commands as well as
doing better in battle.

HP - Shows Maximum and Current HP

MP - Shows Maximum and Current MP

Second Viewing Screen:

Monster's Personality - What this
monster's personality is like.

Monster's Race - The Category of Race this
monster falls into.

Monster's Lineage - Monster's Family Line.

Monster's Trainer - Name of the trainer who
caught this monster.

Current EXP - You currently have this
number of EXP.

Next Level EXP - You need to reach this number
for the next level.

Third Viewing Screen:

Displays the Monster's magic or battle
skills acquired up to now.

Fourth Viewing Screen:

Displays which monsters were mated
(if any) to create the monster you
are looking at.

Item:

Displays the Items that your party is currently
carrying. When in this screen, pressing Select will
arrange the items.

Abilites / Magic:

Displays the Magic and Battle skills acquired thus far
for each monster.
You can also use any healing spells in this screen by
selecting that particular magic and using it on another.

Options:

Allows you to change settings in your party and/or the
game.

Explanation of ( Option ) Commands:

Message Speed:

Allows you to change the speed that the messages
are presented.

Party Order:

Allows you to change the position of each
monster. Monsters on the end usually receive less
attacks.

Tactics:

All Out Attack - Your Monsters will attack
aggressively

Magic Attacks - Your Monsters will use Magic
more often in battles.

Defend & Attack - Your Monsters will
defend more often to preserve
HP.

Command Attack - You will be able to choose
which attacks your monsters
will use.

Save:

Allows you to save the progess of your game.
Only 1 slot is provided, unlike the 3 slots as seen
in the rest of the Dragon Quest games, so be
careful in saving your games.


The Basics of Monster Caretaking:

Here are some tips that may help you with developing a nice
group of powerful monsters:

* Ensure that your monsters fight alot so that they raise levels
quickly. The best strategy is to gain a few quick levels and tackle the
bosses (which comprise of stronger monsters) and have them join your
party. This ensures that your party can take on other monsters which
yield more XP.

* When you wander the land, do you see a nice pork rib? Be sure
to collect as many of these as you can, because your monsters do get
hungry. To tell how hungry they are, enter the Monster Stat option and
look at the numbers. The number located third from the bottom is the
hunger meter; the higher it is, the more hungry the monster is and it
will pay less attention to your commands in battle, so keep this number
at 0 whenever you can.

* There is a feature which deals with mating monsters together.
As you will notice, there are two sexes of monsters and when you bring
both types, either the same or different, to the monster master. You
will hatch a new type that will inherit both or either skills of its
parents..More on this to be discussed soon..

* Here is a tip to increase the chances of obtaining monsters into
your party:

- During battle, go into your inventory and select a piece
of meat.

- When you select it, rather than using it on your own
party, select the second option to toss it out.

- If you have done this right, Terry will throw the meat out
and a little musical note will float around the other monsters
signalling that it was successful.

- Do this as many times as you want, in battle, to increase
the chances of gaining monsters into your party. But, remember
that this does not work all the time =).


Quest System Overview:

Dragon Quest Monsters revolves around the Quest system. The Quest
system consists of surviving thru several levels of various terrain,
many of which have been seen in previous installments of the Dragon
Quest series. The terrain is randomly generated each time, so entering
the same quest several times will yield different ones. Each terrain
consists of monsters, scattered items and a warpgate which allows you
entry to the next floor of the quest. When you progress further and
further in these quests, the levels you must endure are increased before
you confront the final boss of that particular quest.

When going on quests, you might drop to a level where you meet either a
special character inhabiting only one floor which makes things easier:

The Bishop: who will heal you completely and enable you to save in
the middle of a quest.

The Merchant: who will sell you items if you are in need of any
and enable you to save in the middle of a quest.

Treasure Chests: full of good basic items such as healing herbs,
anti-poison herbs, wing of the wyvern, etc.

On occasion, you may encounter some people walking the land, be careful
because before they will give you any help, you have to pass their tests
which is a battle with some extremely strong enemies:

The Bishop: he will completely heal you after you successfully
defeat the monsters.

The Warrior: he will give you an item (although I am not sure..but
it could be seeds which raise a particular stat..more info on this in
the future) after you successfully defeat the monsters.

The Old Man: he will teleport you to the level before the quest
boss.

The Bard: she will increase the maximum MP for each monster in
your party.

Treasure Chests: some which yield valuable items or may be man-
eating chests.

Here is a list of the items you may encounter as you walk around the
terrain:

* Pork Rib - Used to satisfy the hunger of your monsters or
increase the chances of obtaining monsters.

* Wing of the Wyvern - Used to return to the castle.

* Leaf - A healing herb used to regain partial HP or status
recovery herbs.

* (G) - The only method of gaining gold. Be sure to pick it up
when you have the chance.

* Potions - There are many types of potions available. I have
seen ones that regain HP and some that recover MP.

* (?) - Usually Random Items earlier on, but in later levels..they
become seeds used to increase monster stats.

* Treasure Chests - Either contains items, gold or become a Man-
Eating Chest.

* Wands - Can be many of the different types available. I have
encountered: Thunder Wands, Blizzard Wands, Healing Wands and
Teleport Wands.

Dragon Quest Monsters - Terry's Wonderland Walkthrough

The game begins with the main character, Terry and his sister,
Mileyu who are in the middle of getting ready for bed. When night
falls, both characters begin to sleep and late in the evening, you awake
to hear a strange noise. A demon appears from your dresser and kidnaps
your sister. You begin to chase after her and disappear into a new
world, where an old man awaits and takes you to see the king. When the
king has addressed his concerns, you have to form your party. Head
upstairs and talk to the kid standing beside the slime, he will have a
monster menu which deals with adding, removing and keeping monsters
(More to be discussed later). After adding a slime to your party, let
the king know so that he allows you to enter into the basement, thus
giving you access to your first quest - defeat the healer.

During some battles, you might defeat an enemy that wishes to join
your party. Here is the "translation" of the screens in order:

1) A wishes to join your party. Do you accept?
Yes / No
- If "NO", the battle ends and the overworld appears, no monster joins
your party.
- If "YES", goto 2)

2) Edit Name Screen appears.

3) Are you sure you want to join your party?
Yes / No

- If "NO", the battle ends and the overworld appears, no monster joins
your party.
- If "YES", the monster joins your party.

YOU CAN ONLY ALLOW UP TO 3 MONSTERS TO JOIN YOUR PARTY AT ANY GIVEN
TIME!

After dropping down 4 - 5 warpgates, you should be on the same
level as the healer (Dragon Quest 4), talk to him and a battle will
ensue. If you defeat the healer, you will be given the choice to allow
the healer to join your party and then you'll appear back in the castle.
Talk with the king again and then you'll be able to walk around freely
again. Be sure to open the treasure chests in the room left of the
king's throne and after doing so, leave the castle and go down the steps
and into the battle casino (the room with the slime emblem on the
doorway). Be sure that your party is strong and at full HP then talk to
the lady left of the big monster faced door and select the 'G' option
that costs 0 G, you have entered a contest where you have to last
through 3 battles with 3 monsters each time. After you win, the bishop
will summon you back into the castle and after a long speech, you should
head back down into the basement and another door will open up to the
right of the door you entered for your first quest.

After entering into the new door, you will enter a room with 2
warpgates this time. Each warpgate leads to a seperate quest:

The upper warpgate - Defeat the Green Dragon that kept Princess
Gwaelin captive (Dragon Quest)

The lower warpgate - Defeat the Golem protecting Cantlin. (Dragon
Quest)

When you have defeated both quests, you will be warped back into
the castle and access to more of the town will be given (actually the
next floor). Here, you will have access to the library, the vault, an
item shop and another quest - defeating the axe knight (Dragon Quest)
which should not be tackled until you have reached defeated level 'C' of
the battle casino. Since we are on the topic of battle casino, after
you have defeated both quests, head back into the casino and try your
luck on level 'F'. If you manage to win, head back into the castle and
down the basement again; you should notice that the door on the right
side should open up allowing access to another 2 quests:

The left warpgate - Defeat the tiger guarding Papa-san's sword
(Dragon Quest 5)

The right warpgate - Defeat the Monster Tree (Dragon Quest ???)

Eventually you'll be able to keep going till you fight the tiger
(Borongo), defeat him and he'll join your party if you choose to. When
you are about this far, the entire town should be available for you to
roam around. If you think your monsters are ready to continue further
into the game, head into the battle casino and earn the next level.
Should you defeat the monsters, 2 new quests will open up in the castle
basement. Head to the castle, down the stairs and left to the next
screen. A door on the right side will open up and if you enter it, two
warpgates will appear:

The left warpgate - A punk-like slime (Dragon Quest 6?)

The right warpgate - A cyclop bear-like monster (Dragon Quest ???)

After defeating the quests, you should be strong enough to clear
level 'D' of the monster battle casino. After defeating the casino, the
bishop will summon you back to the castle and you will be talking with
the king. After the conversation, the 2nd big door will open up and
inside are two quests.

The right warpgate - Dragon carrying the axe (Dragon Quest ??? )

On the right warpgate, you have a chance to gain about 300 exp for
fighting one dragon. Be careful though, you will need strong characters
with high HP. To gain this exp, you will need to reach the boss of this
gate but do not approach the dragon just yet. Search the eggs that you
can reach and you that egg will hatch, revealing a dragon which you must
fight. Good Luck!

The left warpgate - Granite (?) Titan (Dragon Quest 4)

After defeating the two quests, you should begin to manage your
party and gather 3 of your best fighters. Wander through the most
previous levels to gain experience until you are strong enough. The
reason for this is because the next step to take would be to tackle the
new and higher levels of the battle casino ( C , B , A , S ). You
should begin by tackling level 'C' and if you are successful, you will
be given two new quests.

The right warpgate - the fire dragon (Dragon Quest 3)

The left warpgate - a huge parrot-like bear? (Dragon Quest 4)

Before you tackle the new quests, walk around town and talk to
people...this is a good chance for you to take advantage of some of the
merchants and the vault. As you progress further, the town will change
and you may have access to places you weren't able to go before.
This should probably be a good time to level up your characters as the
game begins to get progressively harder from this point on. When you
believe your characters are strong enough, it is now time to challenge
the next level in the battle casino, level 'B'. Should you be
successful, you will be given 2 more quests in the lower level of the
castle.

The left warpgate - a goat-like eagle? (Dragon Quest ??)

I have encountered a battle arena while heading towards the quest
boss. I am not sure if this is a random encounter or is part of the
level, but it automatically places you in a battle with other people's
monsters just like Dragon Quest 4. You have to beat 3 groups and are
given a choice to either continue to beat more groups or continue down
the levels. The choice is up to you, but be sure to save up your heal
potions for the last boss as he is extremely hard. When fighting the
quest boss, be sure your characters are at least level 30. This boss
fights hard as he dishes out 3 hard hits per round, 1 hard hit for huge
damage or strong magic spells. Be careful!

The right warpgate - Swordman (Dragon Quest 3)

When fighting the quest boss, be sure your characters are healed
and level 34 or higher. When fighting, you will notice that this boss
is not alone and has hard hitting monsters on either side. The trick is
to take care of them quickly and use any wands that you may have for
additional damage so that the swordman will have to face you alone.

To open the other door, you will need to advance further in the battle
casino (level 'A'). This is about the part where I am stuck so all I
can advise for now is to level your characters and obtain more and
stronger monsters by walking around the land and using the meat tactic
to increase your chances of getting monsters. Until the next

Battle Casino -A place to test your monster's battle skills by
enrolling into a tournament and earning rank depending on your
success. Located near the main stairs, 3rd level.

Library - A place to cuddle with a good book..Located near the
main stairs, 2nd level.

Monster Mating - Talk with the old man about mating different
monsters. Located south of the room where the old man found you in
the beginning of the game.

The Vault - A place to store and retrieve your belongings for a
price. Located east of the library.

The Item Merchant - A place to buy items such as healing herbs,
wing of the wyvern, etc. Located east of the Vault.
