Strategy First, Playnet.com and Cornered Rat Software have announced the “Welcome Back Soldier” promotion, a re-evaluation program targeting former account holders, providing an opportunity to experience the many updates and new features of the game.

The program, which provides free play time between December 13th and January 11th for closed account holders, comes after the release of version 1.7 which included major gameplay changes like full combat attrition and a major graphics overhaul achieved through the migration to DirectX 8.1.

“The release of version 1.7 continues our commitment to improving and adding features to the game for our players- new and old,” says Al Corey, Playnet’s Marketing Manager. “The newest game features, vehicles, weapons and upgraded visuals are attracting new players in growing numbers and the addition of Mac players with our recent retail release is turning up the heat on the virtual battlefield.”

Starting Friday December 13th, closed account holders could simply log into the game and auto-update their software to version 1.7 and start playing. Once the free time ends on January 11th, account holders will be encouraged to re-activate their subscription to keep playing.

World War II Online has been getting positive press attention following recent updates including MASSIVE ONLINE GAMING who wrote, "...WWIIOL was not only the first but remains the only true virtual battlefield.” and PC PILOT who wrote “The feelings of camaraderie and sheer terror as the battle rages all around you are stunning.” WWII Online is the winner of the IGNs “Persistant World Game of 2001- Readers’ Choice” and GAMESPY’s “Gamers’ Choice Sim of the Year” (2001).

More details on the ‘Welcome Back Soldier’ re-evaluation program can be found at www.wwiionline.com .

Intel, NVIDIA, Develop Magazine, discreet and GameDev.net have all joined forces with Auran®, the developers of the world class game development engine, Auran Jet, to promote the revolutionary Next Year's Game competition. The competition, launched at the Australian Game Developers Conference last week, has received significant interest from game developers of all sizes and from countries all around the world. With $100,000 of prizes up for grabs, this is no surprise!

Competition entrants use the Auran Jet engine to build the game of their dreams, with the best game demo or prototype winning fabulous prizes. Up for grabs are the latest Intel P4 machines, NVIDIA graphics cards, software from discreet, as well as publicity for the entrants from Develop Magazine and GameDev.net. Auran supplies a free non-commercial license to each entrant and also provides the major prize of a full commercial Auran jet license worth $30,000.

"Judging all the entries will certainly be hard, but we are gamers and we, along with our valued sponsors, know what makes a good game. We will look at the level of innovation, graphics, visual effects, sound and music, game design and gameplay. We are really excited about what people are going to create," said Greg Lane, CEO of Auran.

Bill Rehbock, NVIDIA's Director of Developer Relations immediately saw the potential of Next Year's Game. "This competition is a great way for experienced and aspiring game developers to show off their talents. When Auran came to us with the idea, we knew it was something that NVIDIA wanted to be a part of" he said.

"At GameDev.net, we support the industry as a whole and see Next Year's Game
as a great way of encouraging the small, innovative teams to make their games. With such a great collection of prizes, developers would be crazy to miss this!" said Kevin Hawkins, CEO of GameDev.net.

The competition is open for individual developers and development teams of up to 25 people. Entry forms can be found at www.nextyearsgame.com with the final submission date for entries of games and game prototypes being 27 July 2003 and prize winners being announced at ECTS 2003 (28-30 August 2003).

Swedish interactive entertainment developer MindArk today announced the virtual universe Project Entropia is going gold on January 30th 2003. Project Entropia is Sweden's largest software project ever, and has been in development since 1997.

Project Entropia is a three-dimensional virtual universe on the Internet accessible from any computer with an Internet connection, anywhere in the world.

Project Entropia is an entertainment product aimed for global usage across culture, age and sex barriers. The main focus in the development has been to cater to the features desired by online gamers as well as for users engaged in society and community building - those with an interest in meeting other people for social interaction and adventure. Millions of users will be able to interact in the Project Entropia universe.

Project Entropia introduces unique features like a real economy where its currency, PED, is exchangeable with any major currency in the world. The software needed to enjoy Project Entropia is free to download, and this virtual universe is free to enter and spend time in.

"It is even possible to make a living in Project Entropia," says Chairman Benny Iggland. "This is being demonstrated by several of our commercial trial users. A market economy is rapidly evolving, with our users defining prices on various commodities and items available in the virtual universe. Project Entropia will also incorporate real world commodity trading in a three dimensional environment."

"Some 15 million USD have been invested in the development of Project Entropia to date and we expect to continue developing Project Entropia in the years to come for a sum of at least 5 million USD annually," says Managing Director Jan Welter Timkrans.

Even though the release date has been set for January 30th, 2003, it is possible for anyone who wants a head start to immediately enter the Project Entropia universe after downloading the software at www.project-entropia.com.

It is rumoured that Nintendo are to file a law suit against Sony because of the age-old dispute of the original split between the companies. For those who don't know, Sony were to make a disc-drive for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (commonly known as the "SNES") , but Nintendo allegedly broke the contract and the deal never came to light; allowing Sony to go off and make the Playstation on their own.

icrosoft Game Studios today announced that the MechWarrior 4®: Mercenaries demo is now available for download from the official site at http://www.microsoft.com/games/mw4mercs/. The demo offers players a chance to try out the single-player experience across two different missions and to go for the glory in the brand new Solaris VII arenas. Players can also fight for bragging rights across two different multiplayer maps and take five 'Mechs for a test-stomp, allowing them to get a taste of what it's like to pilot everything from a small scout 'Mech to the brand new Hellhound. The retail version of MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries is now available throughout North America for the estimated price of $49.99 (U.S.).

MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries combines the popular gun-for-hire theme with a dynamic storyline and several features never before seen in the MechWarrior universe. Following the rise to power of a newly formed Mercenary MechWarrior Company, MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries allows players to affiliate with the Northwind Highlanders, Gray Death Legion, Kell Hounds or Wolf's Dragoons to experience a captivating story line that evolves based on players' actions during the game. Features include the ability to command up to eight 'Mechs at one time, as well as new multiplayer options and a new dynamic single player campaign with more than 40 missions. Developed by Cyberlore Studios Inc. in conjunction with Microsoft's FASA Studio, MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries challenges players to decide whether to remain a neutral party in the conflict or intentionally accept contracts that will set them firmly against one of the great Noble Houses. Completing missions for either side ultimately determines the fate of the players' band of mercenaries, and the path they choose determines how their quest ends. Publisher Strategy First and Developer BattleGoat Studios are pleased to announce that they have entered into a worldwide publishing deal to bring Supreme Ruler 2010 to a store near you in Q3 2003.

Individual Regions are left to fight for power to dominate their neighbors, their countries, their continents, and then the world. Experience all the excitement for yourself when Supreme Ruler 2010 ships in Q3 2003.

“We are thrilled to be a part of Strategy First's Lineup. They are not afraid to challenge players with intelligent games, making them the ideal fit for Supreme Ruler 2010," says David Thompson, CEO of BattleGoat Studios.
