DR WHO: Timestreams
Doctor Who: Time Streams is one of the best pinballs released in the
arcades. According to a Dr Who internet site, Time Streams is about when
the Master, the arch-nemesis of the good Dr Who, collaborates with the
Daleks, a warrior race of cyborgs looking like pepperpots, and their creator,
the half-Stephen Hawking half Adolf Hitler genius Davros, to conquer the
Earth using a "Time Expander", a device that'll devolve the Earth, and
lure the first seven incarnations of the Doctor (he has 13 'lives', since
he is an alien with two hearts !) to Earth to be destroyed. However, things
don't go according to plan...
The pinball has some of the greatest sound in a pinball ever, with a
pretty snazzy arrangement of Ron Grainer's eerie theme tune and quotes
from the TV series such as the Dalek's infamous "EX-TER-MIN-ATE !" and
the TARDIS' wheezing and groaning in a cleverly designed match sequence,
and each Doctor's plight is successfully woven into the gameplay. There
are about three ramps, a "transmat" bumper set, buttons for two "spell"
bonuses and, of course, the obligatory MultiBall. You lock the seventh
Doctor and his companion Ace (the balls) into the Time Expander, then
change Earth back to normal, then play multiball to destroy three Daleks,
then the emperor Dalek, then Davros. Exquisite !
This pinabll is worth playing. Sound and sight is beautiful !
