Sega Rally Championship 2 4WD Guide by Anecdote (anecdote@geocities.com) Additional tips for 4WD, this text due to lack of time Hello all 4WD-drivers, Uh... school is really robbing my time and I can't update as often as I like. That's why I am not putting this text in HTML or in my Subaru Impreza Guide. I'll try to update both the Impreza Guide and the Celica Journal ASAP. But school's very important to me too!! Please understand :-) Down to the business, now... It's been a while since I updated my guides, but that doesn't mean I didn't learn new stuff. Au contraire... I got 4'03"06 (4'02"32 potential) with Lancer today. Since the last update (September 1st), I learned a lot about the stages. Now I can tell in more detail about my techniques. About Desert... With Impreza : 57"15 With Celica : 57"19 With Lancer : 57"27 Desert still isn't one of my best stages, but I have gotten more consistent on it. On the first left with the waterhazard, immediately drive onto the grass and stay close the wall. Countersteer and when you exit, you should exit like you never drifted. Target: 229/230km/h. The S-Corner after the checkpoint: also immediately enter the grass. Try to go straight from the first turn to the next. Find the right timing: hard full-steer to the left. I found that this really works, you drift hard and don't lose much speed. Try to exit like you never drifted. Yes, this is hard. Keep close the walls! Target: 229/230 km/h. These turns... I used to stay parallel, and then steer into them, on these turns. You keep pretty good speed, but you don't drive the shortest line and the speed gain isn't that much. The final car... is a total pain when you're fast. Try to out-in-out as much as possible. This means either middle-in-out or in-in-out. This car is just evil!!! GGGRRRH!! AAARGGH!!! I know could have had 56"9x, if it wasn't the re! About Mountain... With Impreza : 1'01"72 With Celica : 1'01"77 With Lancer : 1'01"86 This is the message I posted on Sega Rally Forum (around September 13th): Hi you 4WD-fans! Wow, that Matt Chan is really burning up the tracks huh? 3'59"93 potential!! Matt, if you read this... yuddaman!! Well, but I am not here talk about 306, but about Mountain for 4WD. Today I finally figured how I got my 1'01"72 w/ Impreza. Yes, this time was a fluke! After I got this time, it took me a week and a half to get near 1'02"00. Still it was a mystery how I got it! But (some 2, 3 weeks later), now, I know how to do it consistently (get under 1'01"80)! Okay, it took some time... but who cares? I know you do, Helmet :-) The key corners are the turns that need the most concentration (150%). So focus on them! Okay, it's quite obvious, but I can't stress it enough. K-Right, K-Right: You must approach the first K-Right from the far left and recovered from the slide from the turn before. Then steer (not full steer, just 2/5 or 3/5 steer) into the K-Right, co untersteer again, steer into K-Right, countersteer again, repeat. So in fact your pushing the whe el back and forth all the time. It's quite hard with Lancer, but I can make it work for Impreza a nd Celica. Just experiment... Do the same for the second K-Right, you must stay close to the inner bend. Over take the com car (Stratos, w/ Impreza) on the right-hand side. Make sure your run, after exiting the second K-Right, is straight as possible to the next turn. Target speed should be around 214+ km/h after the second K-Right. Hairpin Right: You must use grass-turn here! If you miss the left-hand side grass-strip with the rear-left wheel you either have to slam the brakes or enjoy becoming part of that nice lo oking wall ;-) So... approach from the far left, with left-side wheels on the grass. When the navigator is about to finish saying 'Checkpoint'. Timing is near the 't' of 'Checkpoin_t_' : -) Full steer to the right with a short tap on the footbrake, don't shift back to 3rd gear. You should enter the grass-patch, and get very near to the wall. Speed should be ab out 170+ km/h. Countersteer to straighten the car out. Then shift back to 3rd, full accel. Shi fting back to 3rd will make the car grip much better, so there's less risk of banging into the wall, PLUS: you will accelerate faster to 186 km/h (for 4th gear shift). I got 172 km/h when I exited today, but parked the car in the second last corner ==> still 1'01"86! S-Corner - Medium Left, Medium Right: Approach this one from the right using, once again, grass-turn. Your drift-angle should be a bit larger than when approaching without grass-turn. Get close the left-hand side wall. When you're nearly there, off accel and steer to right to get close to the grassy bit on the right. When you are getting too close to fast, full accel again. After this turn, put the steer ing wheel in neutral and clip the following (gras) apex. Target speed should be 200+ km/h. I got 202/203 km/h today!! Open hairpin left: The turn before this hairpin is quite important for setting up for getting around nicely. You should go out-in-out very sharply. Drifting too wide will make it hard to get the rear wheel on the grass-strip. So countersteer like hell to go straight! Before you actually go round the hairpin, turn the steering wheel so that the rear wheel is still near the grass. So, you're already turned into a bit before you actually go round. Then hit the footbrake incredibly short (1 zillionth of a second). You will probably end up in the grassy area, but that's okay. Countersteer and full accel. You should aim for 190 km/h, but that's quite hard... I got 186/187 km/h today. The final turns: Go out-in-out sharply, but keep your drift-angle to a minimum. With practice and experience you should know how to push the car further and further with the hairpins and s-corner. Remember: Who dares wins... the most time at hairpins!!! P.S. I'll put this new info and other new bits (Like SAS's Riviera Technique) in the Impreza Guide soon... Laterz, Anecdote About Snowy... With Impreza : 57"71 With Celica : 57"78 With Lancer : 57"44 ===> 56"9x, here I come!! Snowy is cool ===> freezing, in fact! Bad joke, huh?? Most stuff in the Impreza Guide still stands, but there some more subtle stuff to look out for on Snowy. Like: you don't have to out-in-out everywhere! I'll get to that later. That first very unnoticeable S-Corner near the beginning (before the series of 3 Medium turns) is very important. I told you this in the Impreza Guide and I am telling you again. Ever notice on the turn before, there's this rather large white patch. Well I use this for a reference for turning into the S-Corner. I try to go straight from here to the Medium turn after the S-Corner. So... I don't steer much going through this S-Corner. Target: 217 + km/h. The series of 3 Medium turns (Left, Right, Right) This is where don't have to go out-in-out. I try to go middle-in-out, some times in-in-out, with full-steer. How is this possible, do you think? Well, driving over the snow walls with the 2 front wheels helps you grip through the turn somehow. You drive the shortest line and speed loss is very slight. Those snow walls are lifesavers! Target after last Medium Right, before Checkpoint: 217+ km/h. Note though: timing is quite hard... too soon and you'll hit the wall, too late you go wide. K-Left after Checkpoint: Timing for this turn is when you just pass the Checkpoint. Keep fourth gear, full steer, try to run the apex of the snowwall. Target: 200/201 km/h Hairpin Right: Position the car far left, when the navigator just finishes: "Caution Hairpin Right!" Shift back to 3rd gear, full steer to the right with foot- and handbrake. Wallturn? Absolutely go for it!! Don't just drive over the snowwall, but hit the real wall!! It's hard, but it helps you get control over the car much quicker and you run the shortest line. Last S-Corner: Timing is hard... but it's possible to get through this turn, without too many problems. With Impreza and Celica: turn the wheel slightly to the left (about 1/5 of the way), before landing. Then full steer to the left, then full steer to the right. Try to run both snowpath apexes. With Lancer : full steer the left just after landing, full steer to right. Of course, run both snowpath apexes. Target, at finish: 218 km/h, (219 km/h w/ Lancer) About Riviera... With Impreza : 1'06"28 With Celica : 1'06"14 With Lancer : 1'05"95 Thanks must go to SAS for helping me out. Thanks SAS, may you have much luck getting under 4 mins!! Here's his description from Sega Rally Forum (around September 13th): Hello, this is SAS. Where do you hit the walls for wallturn?? How do you setup for hairpins?? First hairpin in Riviera hit your nose at top of the insidewall. Use foot and hand brake. First use foot and hand to hit the wall. After hitting off footbrake but on handbrake until finish the cornering. Shift is 4, then after hitting wall cornering, accell on and third shift. This time braking is so fast. Second hairpin hit bitween the two lines on the insidewall. (Please seek the two lines on second haipin's insidewall) -----|---------|-----------|-------------- | | | insidewall | |here | of second hairpin -----|---------|-----------|-------------- Turning method is almost same at first hairpin. Good luck ! SAS writing In a nutshell: go for wallturns in 4th gear and than shift back to 3rd gear. The spot to hit the wall on the first hairpin: is at the apex. The spot to hit the wall on the second hairpin: the two strips the near the end of the corner. Just take a look at that second hairpin and you'll see. Hopefully you can use this info to get near that 4 minute mark!! If you spot any errors (spelling mistakes, plain bullshit, stuff that isn't true). Or if you don't understand bits of this text, please let me know. Anecdote
